Frequently Asked Questions about Talbot Embedded

What is Talbot Embedded?

Talbot Embedded is a cohort-based, hybrid version of the M.A. in Christian Ministry and Leadership (Ministry & Leadership) or the M.Div. (Pastoral and General Ministries). Students complete most coursework online, then gather in person for 2–3 days of intensives with professors and classmates in your city.

How is Talbot Embedded different from Talbot’s fully online or on-campus degrees?

The M.A. in Christian Ministry and Leadership (Ministry & Leadership) and M.Div. (Pastoral and General Ministries) degrees are the same degree, regardless of which format the students are engaged in the program — residentially in La Mirada, fully online or as part of a Talbot Embedded hybrid cohort. Talbot Embedded is unique in its hybrid format. Unlike the fully online format, Talbot Embedded is cohort based and includes required in-person gatherings to build deeper relationships and spiritual formation. Unlike the fully on-campus (residential) program in La Mirada, you don’t need to relocate to Southern California since you stay rooted in your current ministry context.

What courses will I study?

Please visit these pages to view the list of courses and prerequisites for each program.

Note: As this is a cohort model, the elective courses have been preselected by the department to best accommodate both degrees being offered in the cohort.

Who is Talbot Embedded designed for?

Talbot Embedded is designed for ministry leaders, pastors and church members who want advanced training, while continuing to serve in their local church or parachurch organization.

Do I have to live in Southern California to participate?

No, you only need to be able to travel to the designated location once per semester for the 2–3 days of in-person sessions.

Are Talbot Embedded programs fully accredited?

Yes, the M.A. in Christian Ministry and Leadership (Ministry & Leadership) degree and M.Div. (Pastoral and General Ministries) degree are accredited by WSCUC and ATS. Students are enrolled in the same degrees. The Talbot Embedded cohorts simply provide a hybrid experience, blending the Talbot’s online courses with an in-person experience each semester which is local for the cohort.

Will I receive the same academic quality as other Talbot students?

Absolutely, you’ll study under the same Talbot faculty, receive the same rigorous training, and graduate with the same degree as on-campus or fully online students. Talbot Embedded students take the same online classes as fully online students but have the added benefit of a local in-person experience.

How much flexibility is built into the program?

The Talbot Embedded format blends our traditional online learning format with an in-person weekend intensive. Synchronous video conferencing is incorporated for group discussions and faculty office hours.

Can I switch between Talbot Embedded, online or on-campus formats later?

No, Talbot Embedded is a distinct track with its own cohort structure. Unlike the fully online format, Talbot Embedded is cohort-based and includes required in-person gatherings to build deeper relationships and spiritual formation. As such, students commit to the cohort and this format upon enrollment.

Do I need to already be serving in ministry to apply?

While ministry experience is not required, this program is designed with current and emerging ministry leaders in mind.

Can I transfer credits taken at another seminary to Talbot Embedded?

Please refer to our Transfer Credit Process. Please note that transferring credits may impact your participation in a cohort.

How many courses will I be taking per semester?

Due to the cohort model, the Talbot Embedded format typically takes three years to complete, with classes being taken in fall, spring and summer terms. M.A. students will be required to enroll in two hybrid courses per semester. M.Div. students must enroll in additional M.Div.-specific courses concurrently with the hybrid courses to complete their degree in three years.
